The importance of education was instilled in me at an early age. My parents, both educators, always stressed to me that I could accomplish my goals through education. While growing up in America, I was fortunate enough to have access to high standards of education and a variety of extra curricular activities that have helped to shape my life in a positive way. As a young female with fair opportunity and exposure to many activities, I was able to develop strong characteristics of confidence and independence, which pushed me to succeed.
When I returned to South Sudan in 2005, my countrymen constantly told me that they sent their children to neighboring countries so they could get a good education. Although not surprised, I was saddened to learn that after decades of war, our children did not have access to strong education here in South Sudan and children were living apart from their families. It was then that I knew I wanted to bring premier educational programs, like what I experienced in America, to my country.
Founding the American School of South Sudan has enabled me to realize my ultimate goal to help build South Sudan through the education of our young people. My vision is to see our well-educated children become that spark in revitalizing South Sudan. Please join me on this journey; together we will empower the youth of South Sudan through education.
Sincerely, Nok Nora Bassey
